FOCAS has received funds this summer through the Canada Summer Jobs Program 2021. There were a total of 5 positions available, which were advertised by the Government of Canada on the Job Bank. FOCAS also advertised on our social media platforms to obtain a good selection of candidates. In total we received more than 178 resumes, from which we chose the 5 students who we felt best qualified for the positions.
Their resumes stood out from the rest and after thorough screening, we hired the following people: Autumn Taha and Halima Yusuf to tutoring, Mary Pal to Sport, Turtu Shamil to youth engagement and Huda Osman for Office Assistant. Job descriptions and introductory training were provided and these highly qualified individuals started working for us.
The program has been a learning experience for all. Although we have a tutoring program in place, the students for the summer program were still in school for the month of June. This situation has allowed us to work on the scheduling and placements for our Canada Summer job employees. Mary Pal who is our sport person, has checked out fields and worked on flyers to help advertise as well as designing the current program of sport events.
Autumn and Halima have planned their schedules and were able to begin engaging with students and Turtu planned events engaging with youth as well. Huda has experience as a volunteer during our Red Cross Grant program and has proven to be a knowledgeable member of the team. We are looking forward to a July with many activities planned and fun for all who participate.
